Hundreds of Taiwanese release lanterns in the Pingxi district of New Taipei City, in hopes of good fortune and prosperity in the Chinese New Year before the traditional Lantern Festival. The festival falls on Feb. 14.

Firefighters attempt to put out a fire in a slum at Modhubagh in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A child was burnt alive and hundreds of shanties were gutted during the fire that originated from a cooking oven in the slum, firefighters said.
